The Monument Lab
The Monument Lab is where Rust Observer documents custom monuments, real-world inspirations, unfinished builds, design experiments, and the process of turning an idea into a playable Rust location.
The Monument Lab is the workshop side of Rust Observer.
This is where custom monument projects will be documented from idea to playable location: references, sketches, terrain problems, scale decisions, layout tests, gameplay logic, and all the small mistakes that happen before something finally works.
Some builds will start from real places.
A lighthouse.
A shoal.
A rock formation.
A strange industrial structure.
A forgotten coastal building that already looks like it belongs in Rust.
But copying a real place is rarely enough. Rust has its own rules. Players need routes, cover, loot logic, visibility, risk, and reasons to move through a space instead of just looking at it.
That is where the work begins.
The Monument Lab is not only about finished results. It is also about the process: how a real location becomes a Rust monument, how scale changes, how details are simplified, how gameplay reshapes the original idea, and how a build slowly becomes something that feels native to the island.
Some projects will be clean.
Most will not.
That is part of the fun.
